Common use
Sumatriptan is a medication used to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura. It belongs to a class of drugs called triptans, which work by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and blocking pain signals. It does not prevent migraines or reduce their frequency. Sumatriptan is also effective for treating cluster headaches in some patients.
Dosage and direction
Sumatriptan is available in several forms, including tablets, nasal spray, and subcutaneous injection. It should be taken at the first sign of a migraine, and if symptoms return, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours (for tablets). The maximum dosage varies depending on the form, so follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Do not exceed the daily limit.
Precautions
Before using sumatriptan, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, liver problems, or a history of stroke. The drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving until you know how it affects you. It should not be used as a preventive medication. Avoid other triptans or ergot-type drugs within 24 hours of taking sumatriptan.
Contraindications
Sumatriptan is contraindicated in patients with coronary artery disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or severe liver impairment. It should not be used by those with a history of stroke or hemiplegic/basilar migraine. Do not use sumatriptan within 24 hours of taking ergotamine or another triptan. It is also not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly needed.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include tingling, flushing, dizziness, fatigue, and a sensation of pressure in the chest or throat. Some users may experience nausea or mild discomfort at the injection site. Rare but serious effects include heart attack, arrhythmias, or serotonin syndrome. Seek immediate help if you notice chest pain, shortness of breath, or severe allergic reactions.
Drug interaction
Sumatriptan may interact with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAO inhibitors, and certain antidepressants, increasing the risk of serotonin syndrome. Using it with ergot-containing drugs or other triptans can lead to dangerous blood vessel constriction. Let your doctor know about all medications, including herbal supplements. Avoid alcohol while using this medication, as it may worsen headaches or side effects.
Missed dose
Sumatriptan is used as needed for migraine attacks and not on a regular schedule. If a migraine recurs, a second dose may be taken, but not sooner than the recommended interval. Do not take extra doses if symptoms do not improve after the first. Seek medical advice if the medication is ineffective.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include tremors, redness, high blood pressure, or chest pain. In severe cases, it may cause seizures or cardiovascular complications. Immediate medical attention is required. There is no specific antidote, and treatment is supportive.
Storage
Store sumatriptan at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze the nasal spray or injection. Keep out of reach of children. Dispose of expired or unused medication properly.
